Stalactite, 2010, video, 5 minutes 22 seconds, Singer: Ben Escorcio
The second largest stalactite in the world is located in a cave in the West of Ireland. It is known as the Great Stalactite of Doolin and measures over 7 metres long. The magnificent white calcite form hangs alone in a cavern surrounded by darkness. It has grown over the course of a million years in its black chamber. Stalactite was screened in an old brewery in Cork. The screen, measuring ten metres, held the full size of the stalactite, showing the scale of a young boy standing beneath it. He sang without words or any reference to a known melody filling the cavern with primitive sounds. His voice was close to breaking but still that of a boy soprano. Stalactite juxtaposed the pace of human time and geological time.
