Eclipse
15 October 1989 – 14 March 1990
Moma PS1, New York
Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin
A large photograph of a solar-eclipse hung mid-air, with a cluster of cut-out shark forms hanging from it. A light emanated from the back of the framed image. A causeway curved from the floor upwards towards the eclipse. This slender form was made of plates of thin, black-iron steel from which shapes of the sharks were cut.
A chaise sat centrally in the curve of the runway, constructed of wood and faced with rusted metal. A test- tube filled with fossilised shark teeth protruded from the chaise, emerging through a hole in a pale wooden form.
Eclipse was first made for a residency show at PS1 New York and was later shown at the Douglas Hyde gallery with a different bed.
