Salve
30 May – 29 June 2002
Kerlin Gallery, Dublin
Chiropsalmus I–XVI, 2002, Jellyfish on paper
Jellyfish Lake, 2002, Video, 6 minutes
The jellyfish drawings developed further into large scale photographs Sheet (above) and Pillowcases (below).
The title of this show is from the word ‘salve’ which is inlaid in the doorstep of Goethe’s house in Weimar. Goethe was the pre-eminent poet, novelist, scientist and statesman in Germany from 1749–1832. Salve which is a greeting in Italian also means a blessing, a cure and salvation. A long branch of driftwood lay on the gallery floor with an exact copy of the lettering from the Goethe doorstep inlaid in dark bog-oak onto the Cherry branch.
Jellyfish Lake, a video, shows a woman floating in calm green waters as jellyfish navigate around her body and through her hair. Jellyfish Lake was filmed in Palau Micronesia while researching for Come into the Garden Maude and Medusae. Jellyfish ‘drawings’ were grouped on the walls: chironex fleckeri the box-jellyfish from eastern Australia and chrysaora isoceles the compass jellyfish that swim off Irish shores. Jellyfish are 98% water and 2% animal and leave a drawing of themselves on the linen, cotton or paper once dehydrated.
A set of small shelves harboured several works. A photograph of Maude Delap emerging from beneath weathered mirror. The bones of a human finger with a cast gold finger-print. A bird’s nest through which a bird had woven a string of gold. A thimble topped with a whisker from a walrus.
