Ebb
18 August – 17 September 1988
The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin
Mother, 1988, Wood, bronze miniature Shark Lady sculpture, lightbulb, rope and antique hip bath
The Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin is a wonderful deep, sunken, space entered from above like an empty pool. A wooden jetty was built at the end of the stairs leading the viewers down amongst the sculptures. Ebb consisted of an array of strange couplings as if stranded on the floor, assemblages of found elements and implied bodies: Mr and Mrs Holy Joe with fragments of holy- statue hands. Erotic Couple with pale-pink floral wallpaper. Tall Figure with a megaphone pointing upwards and Mother with a giant leg-span and extended plank-like diving board.
Ebb suggested that couplings might change with the new tide and present new arrangements when revealed again on the gallery floor.
